For the average surfer, having your photo published in a surf magazine is a dream come true.  So try to imagine the feeling of having your picture published on the cover of a surf publication!  STOKED!  Now, imagine that feeling times 9!  On Jason Apparicio’s last trip to Indonesia he scored epic surf at a semi-secret spot that is not for the faint hearted.  He also scored many epic barrels, one of which landed him on the cover of an Italian Surf Magazine, his ninth cover shot of a surf publication.  We caught up with Jason to find out a little more about his history of surf mag covers…

“Cover #1 was obviously my first cover and it was the first time I did an actual photo shoot in my home country. I was living at the time in florida in 1995 the shot was me paddling back out and Kevin O’Connor in the Tube, Kevin used to rip and charge back then!”

“Cover#2 was the following year with the same group of surfers from Brazil but with a different photographer. We scored some really good waves at Mt.Irvine with this shoot!”

“Cover#3 was in the Canary Islands when I was competing on the ASP Europe Tour. Pete Frieden took this shot in El Quemo. Its more about the sky, but a cover is a cover, and  I will take it!”

“Cover#4 was a trip to Mt.Irvine with Damien Hobgood, Peter Mendia and Jeremy Saukel. The waves were bombing on Ash Wednesday and I was so hungover from playing carnival! I was glad I made the flight to get number 4! Alex Laurel was the photographer.”

“Cover#5 was shot during my first trip to Indonesia. It was just the best! We were shooting a video called ‘All Our Bros”  This was the wave right after I came out the barrel, I claimed it and the lip of the wave hit my head and knocked me off by board! It was funny to see! This mag was from latin america.”

“Cover #6 was a little island in Indo named Asu where we put a huge camera on the board.  I was getting so many barrels on this trip. It was one of the best trips of my life!  Thanks to gecko the photographer! It is too bad that this place doesn’t break anymore since a big earthquake raised the reef up and its way to shallow to surf now!”

“Cover #7 was from a french magazine.  It was running the same month as cover #6,  so its was cool to have two covers at the same time! My sponsors was really stoked!”

“Cover#8 was another trip to the Mentawaii Islands in Indonesia. It was also my second cover with Surf Europe, which is the biggest surf mag in europe. The shot was taken at lance’s left up top on the shallow part.”

“Cover#9 is another shot from Indo. Green Bush, this place is a heavy wave. After this wave I got so beat up! It was like time to go back to the boat and eat breakfast. It was worth the licks! Gosh, what a shallow wave!”

When asked about his future plans for more cover shots, Jason responded…  ”if Kelly Slater gets his 10th world title, I will go for my 10th cover, so we will see!”

We certainly hope that both of these happen!  Big respect to Jason for continuing to represent Trinidad and Tobago to the Fullest.  And for those who weren’t keeping score…that’s also 3 cover shots for Mt.Irvine…Epic!  You can catch up with Jason at:
